Pest Control Solutions for Rats & Mice
3 July 2023In the UK, the two most common types of rats are the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus, also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, Norway rat, or wharf rat) and the Black Rat (Rattus rattus, also known as the ship rat, roof rat, or house rat). Here are the main differences between these two species:

- Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus):
- Size and Appearance: Brown rats are larger than black rats, usually weighing between 350-500 grams (adults). They have a blunt nose, small ears and a tail shorter than their body length. Their fur is coarse and brown or grey.
- Habitat: Brown rats are burrowers and are commonly found on the ground or in burrows. They are associated with human dwellings and are typically found in sewers and other urban and suburban areas.
- Diet: Brown rats are omnivorous but prefer a diet rich in carbohydrates and proteins. They can eat nearly anything available, but they prefer cereal grains.
- Behaviour: Brown rats are known to be good swimmers, both on the surface and underwater, but they are poor climbers. They are mostly active at night (nocturnal).
The less common Black rat
- Black Rat (Rattus rattus):
- Size and Appearance: Black rats are smaller than brown rats, usually weighing between 150-200 grams (adults). They have a pointed nose, large ears, and a tail that is longer than their body length. Their fur is smooth and can be black or light brown.
- Habitat: Black rats are excellent climbers and are typically found in upper parts of buildings or in trees. They were common on ships and are found in port areas.
- Diet: Black rats are omnivorous but prefer a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains. They are known to cause significant damage to crops.
- Behaviour: Black rats are known for their agility and climbing ability. They are also most active at night (nocturnal).
These two species have different impacts on the environment and human populations. The brown rat is generally more common and is often the species involved in situations where pest control is needed.
